AJPW TV #4 (1/28/1984)

Great Kabuki def Steve Olsonoski

This was a short spirited sprint of a match. This was joined in progress and it was all action until Kabuki picked up the win. This was probably the best Kabuki match I've ever seen even with it being clipped.

Steve Olsonoski has been a really fun guy to watch on this tour. He's put good matches on with Jumbo and Kabuki in singles matches. His offense is believable and he's had good chemistry with most of the guys. He also works the formula well of getting his stuff in but making AJPW regulars look amazing in the process.

Genichiro Tenryu vs. Umanosuke Ueda - Double DQ

There was never any match here. Ueda attacked as he came out and this just turned into an absolutely wild brawl. They brawled all around the ring until the referee had enough and disqualified both of them.

This was a highly entertaining brawl, They kept it pretty intense for the duration and it was a nice change of pace with a lot of the other matches to this point.

NWA International Tag Team Title Match:

Giant Baba and Jumbo Tsuruta (c) def Fabulous Freebirds

This was a really good tag team main event this week. Good energy and pace throughout the whole match. The crowd was also really into this one. The only downer in this match was Giant Baba. I compliment his 1970s work a lot but he's really starting to decline as a worker. His offense is just awful at this point in his career. You can just feel the labor that he goes through just being in there and it's not pleasant.

I'm going to add this one to my notable matches list. It was a really good match especially when Tsuruta was in there working with Gordy. It was a title match and they made it feel like there was that championship level importance to the match.

Overall Thoughts:

Really good show this time out as all of the matches were entertaining. The 45 minutes just flew by with good wrestling. I would call this the best of the 4 episodes I've watched so far.

AJPW TV #3 (1/21/1984)

Lizmark def Ultra Seven

I ddn't care for this match at all. The slower pace was perfectly fine but the execution was just terrible. Most of Lizmark's big moves barely hit their mark which made him look bad. It kind of feels like Ultra Seven was slightly out of place on a lot of these moves which caused the problem. It feels like they were using this to showcase Lizmark to the AJPW crowds and they misfired on his big impressive moves.

Genichiro Tenryu and Great Kabuki def Michael Hayes and Steve Olsonoski

Kind of an oddball paring here with Hayes and Olsonoski.

This was okay but I think it was hampered by having Olsonoski instead of Gordy in the match. You really noticed those little things that experienced tag partners do in matches like this. This felt like a filler match which I'm sure it was. I really don't have a lot to say on this particular match because it was pretty basic and did it's job. It set up sympathy for the faces and they overcame and won the match.

The Kabuki tags so far have all followed this kind of same formula. It works pretty well when you have a limited worker like Kabuki in the ring. He doesn't have to do a lot and it really covers a lot of his flaws. I'm not totally sure of his card placement at this point though. I'm guessing that he's the no. 4 face on the roster behind Tsuruta, Baba and Tenryu. I could be wrong on that though.

Jumbo Tsuruta def Terry Gordy

Now we're talking with this match.

This was a pretty good match. Good energy with Jumbo and Gordy really putting a beating on each other. I liked the chemistry between them a lot. Sadly, Michael Hayes ran in for the DQ. I'm not sure how the AJPW rules work because Hayes literally attacked Jumbo and hit him with the chair and the referee didn't call for the DQ. I wasn't happy at the ending as the match was getting good. This made me want to see a lot more of them in the ring. This match probably served it's purpose really well and drew fans to the shows to see Jumbo take on the Freebirds.

We get some post match antics as Hayes and Gordy continue to attack Jumbo until Tenryu and Kabuki run in for the save.

Overall Thoughts:

This episode wasn't as strong as the two previous. This show had a pretty bad opener and an uninspiring middle tag match. I liked the main event a lot but it ended when it was just getting good. I am interested in getting some more Jumbo vs. Freebirds matches. It was cool to see an angle play out on TV. You can't win them all when it comes to weekly wrestling TV. This wasn't bad by any means, it just wasn't the best show that this era of AJPW seems capable of producing.

Giant Baba vs. The Destroyer (11/12/1972)

This is a slower paced match and it won't be everyone's cup of tea. A lot of mat work here as they keep it grounded a lot. I'm a huge Destroyer fan and enjoy almost everything he's in.

I once described Giant Baba as being like a bumblebee to my wife. With his build you expect this big awkward guy, which he is, but he does a lot of stuff to surprise you in the ring. He gets around quicker than you would expect in his younger days.

Anyways, I thought this was a good match.

John Travolta Tokyo Drink

The commercials were kept on the AJPW TV and I came across this weird little commercial. It's John Travolta shillin some Japanese drink.

AJPW TV #2 (1/14/1984)

Great Kabuki and Magic Dragon def Gypsy Joe and Goro Tsurumi

I'm surprised that Magic Dragon actually wrestled in Japan. I always thought that WCCW had just put some guy under a mask and pretended he was from Japan to make him appear more exotic at the time. Well, live and learn. I took a look at Gypsy Joe for 1984 and he was an uninspiring 5-27-6 for the year.

Very similar match to last week's match. I thought this match worked a little better because Magic Dragon added some speed and agility to it in spots. I want to call this a feud of sorts for Kabuki but these guys have been so far down the card from where he is that I don't think that's possible. Kabuki finishes them off with a fist drop off the ropes. Overall this is a nothing match. This would be like watching a squash match for a U.S. promotion.

The Japanese commercials are still on these episodes and I just saw John Travolta whoring some Japanese drink.

Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy) def Genichiro Tenryu and Takashi Ishikawa

The Freebirds toss their flowers into the crowd as soon as they receive them to the delight of the crowd. Terry Gordy is a mainstay of All Japan through the 80s and early 90s. He ends up being a 2x Triple Crown Champion and a 7x World Tag Team Champion and three tag league wins under his belt. Stan Hansen is probably one of the only more successful All Japan Gaijins.

Now I really enjoyed this match. They kept a nice pace throughout the match. Terry Gordy and Tenryu in the ring together meant good things here. Ishikawa was the fall guy and took the worst of the beating here. The Freebirds in this time period were a fun team to watch. They know how to double team and how to time hope spots for the other team and when to allow comebacks. Tenryu was a good foil for the Freebirds as he didn't allow them to bully him and he was willing to go toe to toe with Gordy in the ring. We're only two shows in but this is currently my top AJPW match for 1984 and will probably make my notable matches list. I'm sure it's going to fall off of my top match list rather quickly.

NWA International Title Match:
Jumbo Tsuruta (c) def Steve Olsonoski

Olsonoski chalked up singles victories over Ashura Hara and Masanobu Fuchi at non-televised events leading into this championship match with Tsuruta.

This was a pretty good back and forth match. This would be a perfect televised championship defense back in the States around this time. Tsuruta and Olsonoski meshed really well in this match. You never got the feeling that Tsuruta was in any threat of being beaten but that didn't detract from the match. I know Tsuruta is awesome but this match makes me want to see Olsonoski wrestle more on televison. He's a really fun worker. I will probably throw this on my notable matches list because it was a title defense and a fun overall match.

Overall Thoughts:

I thought this was a really good episode. The Freebirds vs. Tenryu/Ishikawa was a really good tag team match that's worth checking out if you can find it and the Tsuruta title defense was an energetic match that showcased both guys pretty well. I also think this was a good follow up to the first episode. That episode introduced you to the main players and this episode threw some good wrestling at you. I'm two episodes in and this has me wanting to watch more episodes.
